Aggregate -casting ideas on matter
Aggregate -casting ideas on matter
Steven Lloyd
This research orientated and experimentally based project explores and critically discerns how the
ideas generated by “site” might be conceptualized through a design process, And explores how these
inform an architectural project negotiating issues of “aggregation.”
The site – slopes and quarry / cone and crater of the Three Kings volcanic field / Te Tatua a Riukiuta.
The site is possibly the largest explosion crater in the Auckland volcanic field formed some 28,500
years ago. It has had an occupational history both by Maori and Pakeha , and today exists as one of
the surviving operational aggregate quarries used in city building. It also performs as public reserve,
state house enclave and light commercial business zone. It has a geophysical , sociocultural, and
aesthetic presence in the city.
